Hazel is an environmental scientist with a broad range of project experience coordinating the Land Team at Westcountry Rivers Trust, working closely with other teams to protect water quality through a holistic ecosystem approach to land management and best practice on a catchment scale. The Land Team comprises seven very experienced, qualified advisors, professionally trained to provide agronomy standard advice – working with farmers and landowners to influence and achieve positive environmental change. The team have established history and contacts in our catchments, providing consistent support and a recognisable, trusted presence on the ground.

Scientific Research: Example projects with scientific research have included; field & lab work with Kings College to assess eel population decline (EU Indicang project); ecological sampling and landowner interviews to evaluate impacts of mire restoration on agriculture – leading to a PhD (Exmoor Mires); contributing to an innovative programme of sampling to establish protocol & quantify baseline soil organic carbon levels towards potential Payments for Ecosystem Services (Tamar Valley Organic Group & Rothamsted Research); evaluation of Ecosystem Services on the Tamar catchment considering uncertainties of scale (Valuing Nature Network; see publications).

Land Management & Farm Advice: Hazel is an experienced farm advisor qualified to BASIS (Soil & Water), Voluntary Initiative Pesticides Best Practice, Natural England CSF delivery and Rivers Trust Pinpoint Farm Advice courses to Advanced level. Delivery on the ground has included a number of catchments and focus criteria eg. Pesticide, colour and nutrient reductions in drinking water supplies, WFD failures specifically targeting elevated Phosphate (linked to soil loss) and FIOs, Invasive Non Native Species (INNS) and broader riparian management for biodiversity. All of which supported by good communication skills for professional one to one advice, tailored farm reports demonstrating balanced environmental and economic outcomes, presentations to peer & Industry groups – now combined as Head of Land Management to oversee a team of 6 advisors.

Launch of Pesticides Simulator

In July 2018, Nick Paling completed the development work of the Upstream Thinking Pesticides Simulator and presented it to South West Water and University of Exeter.

Presentation at EU Green Week

In May 2018, Nick Paling was invited to give a TED-style talk at the EU Green Week Conference in Brussels on the subject of ‘Greener Cities for a Greener Future’

Ecological sampling & survey techniques: Hazel has developed a suite of survey skills to complement project delivery; particularly aquatic invertebrates (sampling, identification, RIVPACS & biotic indices evaluation), fisheries (Intermediate Electro Fishing & 10 years of field experience), river corridor surveys (rapid fluvial walkovers, wet weather & hydro-geomorphology assessment, INNS), biological and chemical water quality monitoring for targeted interventions. These were applied extensively in the SEPP project and Catchment Investigations for SWW as scoping to inform and prioritise future investment work.

Stakeholder & Partnership Engagement: Hazel has demonstrated a strong role in Partnership working, both with peer groups co-ordinating delivery such as the Taw River Improvement Project (TRIP), through close development of the Upstream Thinking programme with SWW and Partners since 2009, and wider stakeholders from the inception & hosting of the Catchment Based Approach (CaBA) Tamar Pilot which brought together ~100 interested parties across all sectors towards a collaborative approach to catchment management. This also draws on her previous career experience in the Business sector, with the ability to communicate at the desired level and recognising the need for efficiencies and effectiveness as well as an organised and proactive manner
